School Counseling Services
Counseling and Responsive Services
a. Classroom Guidance – The counselor will meet with students as a class to provide guidance lessons i.e. bullying, mental health awareness, character education, career development, transitioning to middle school, etc.
b. Individual Counseling – A student may be referred to the counselor by a teacher or staff referral, self referral, or guardian request. The topics can cover a variety of topics in order to help the student be more successful i.e self-esteem, respecting others, anger management, social and emotional concerns.
c. Small Group – A small group will consists of 4-8 students where one topic is addressed i.e. getting along with others, career development, transitioning to middle school, test taking skills, etc.
Referrals
Students may see the School Counselor when a referral is received in one of the following ways:
- Teacher or staff referral
- Student Self-referral
- Counselor request
- Parent request
- Administrative referral
- Referral by friend(s)
Consultation Services
a. Section 504 – The counselor serves as the Section 504 Chair. Section 504 is a program that can provide accommodations for students with disabilities that may help them overcome their disability while receiving the same education as their peers in a general education classroom environment.
b. Student Support Team (SST Tier 3) - The School Counselor participates in SST Tier 3 meetings as needed. Whenever a teacher identifies an academic, speech, or behavioral concern in the classroom, a group of people known as the Student Support Team will come together to discuss strategies/interventions to improve the student’s performance.
c. School Social Worker and DFACS –The School Counselor works very closely with the School Social Worker and DFACS to address concerns over abuse and neglect allegations or suspicions. As a mandated reporter, this means that she is required by law to report such claims to the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS).
